Five tips for keeping on top of your housework

I have to admit that I do like to have a clean home and can be a bit of a clean freak sometimes. I am getting better at letting things go but being a full time working mum doesn’t leave much time for the housework.

So here are some things that I try to do each week to try and keep on top of everything so that when the weekend comes round we can spend more time together as a family.

These are my top five tips:

Tip 1

Never go to bed with an untidy kitchen. This just makes more work for the morning or the next night. The kitchen is the heart of the house so if you keep this tidy it makes it easier to keep the rest of the house clean.

Tip 2

Wash during the week. For me this means that on the weekend I only have to do one or two loads of washing and not five or six, which means more time spent with the family. It can be very daunting to see a huge pile of washing on the weekend so easier to tackle one load at a time.

Tip 3

Split your house into zones and clean a zone each night. When I can I do this and vacuum and mop one night, bathrooms another, good clean of the kitchen another and by the end of the week all areas have been cleaned. Even if you stick to the high traffic areas, it makes it easier to clean on the weekend.

Tip 4

Spend the half hour/hour after your kids are in bed before sitting down to watch your favourite TV show/relax cleaning and if you focus just on cleaning it is amazing how much you can get done in that short time frame. If you do ½ hour a night that adds up to 2.5 hours of cleaning – how long would you spend on the weekend cleaning?

Tip 5

Use products that make cleaning easy for you. I recently purchased enjo products. The best enjo product I have is the mop for shiny floors. It saves me so much time as I used to mop and then polish the floors with a towel but with this I only have to mop and my floor is shiny and dry. It means that I can get my floors mopped in half the time.

These tips have been a good reminder to myself also but it’s important not to beat yourself up if you don’t keep on top of your housework all the time.

You and your kids are not going to remember the times that you had a messy house, but you will remember the memories you made. But if you do a little bit each day it is definitely a lot easier to manage.

If you can afford it, get a cleaner. I have had a cleaner come once a fortnight for the last 2 months and it has been great. I still clean in between but it definitely helps to lighten the load.

  1. Cleaning usually happens on a Friday for me, it’s a day I am at home with my son and I like to have the house nice and clean for the weekend. I don’t usually do any cleaning at night because most of the time as soon as my son goes to bed it’s work time for me because I work for myself. I had a cleaner once when we had a much bigger house, but now I can clean ours pretty quickly.

  2. Great tips! Thanks for sharing! I too hate to go to bed knowing that there are dishes not done or the bench top dirty! Like to wake up to a clean kitchen. Unfortunately by the time I manage to put both lil ones in bed, I’m pretty much buggered myself. As for washing during the week, I try to as well – but it’s almost impossible when you work during the week too!
